Behind your carbon story

Meal sizes, worked examples, TGO factors and sources—all explained step by step.

This is an educational model of selected activities in one day. Results combine published factors with explicit workshop assumptions. They are estimates, not measurements or TGO certification.

Travel

Distance × factor. Car emissions are divided by the number of people sharing the journey (exclude a hired driver). Rail and bus factors are already per passenger; do not divide them again.

Rail 0.03 and bus 0.07 are older Thai government CO₂-only proxies, not current BTS/MRT-specific lifecycle CO₂e factors. Motorbike 0.07 and car 0.18 are illustrative workshop assumptions, not verified TGO factors. Walking/cycling counts zero operational emissions. Vehicle manufacture, infrastructure and additional food are excluded.

Food & drinks

A regular model meal contains 75 g dry rice, 100 g vegetables and 100 g of the selected protein ingredient. Small and large multiply all three by 0.75 and 1.5. These are ingredient-weight assumptions, not measured Thai dishes or nutritionally equivalent portions. Cooking energy, sauces, takeaway packaging and uneaten food are excluded.

Ingredient factors (kgCO₂e/kg): rice 4.45; vegetables 0.53; tofu 3.16; chicken 9.87; pork 12.31; beef from beef herds 99.48; eggs 4.67; coffee 28.53; dairy milk 3.15; soy milk 0.98. Global means from Poore & Nemecek (2018), processed by Our World in Data; not Thailand-specific.

Black coffee uses 15 g coffee; a latte adds 200 g dairy or soy milk. A glass of milk uses 250 g. Brewing energy, sugar, ice and cups are excluded. “Not eaten” contributes zero; it is never offered as a reduction action.

Extra meals & snacks

Extra meals use the same rice, vegetables and protein model as the main meals. Snack servings: banana 100 g, plain peanuts 30 g, egg 50 g, chicken 50 g or pork 50 g. Multiply by the selected number of servings. Banana (0.86 kgCO₂e/kg) and groundnut/peanut (3.23 kgCO₂e/kg) factors are global means from the same Poore & Nemecek dataset above. Portion sizes are workshop assumptions. These are ingredient estimates, not measured Thai snack recipes; cooking, sauces, added sugar and oil are excluded. Count each item only once.

Shower & cooling

Electricity = power (kW) × hours. Hot-shower minutes are divided by 60. Defaults: 4.5 kW heater, 0.8 kW average AC draw, 0.05 kW fan. Appliance power is a workshop assumption; actual use depends on equipment and conditions. Cooling is shared between room occupants. Shower electricity is personal.

Default grid factor: 0.5562 kgCO₂e/kWh, TGO CFP grid mix 2022–2024 (2026 listing). Normal showers count zero water-heating electricity; water supply, wastewater and pumping are excluded from both shower types.

One change, over time

Savings = baseline − changed-day estimate. Weekly savings = savings per action day × chosen days per week. Annual potential = weekly savings × 52 weeks. This assumes the same day and action repeat, with unchanged factors. It is a scenario, not a promise. Tree equivalents are not used because uptake varies by species, age and growing conditions.
